In the Weeds as a New Server? What to Do Right Now
Everybody gets buried. The servers who look calm aren't faster than you. They just batch their work and ask for help early.
Right now
- Ask a server you trust for help. Say it straight: "I'm in the weeds, can you run drinks for me?"
- If nobody can help, go to your manager before tables go bad. They'd rather hear it from you than from a guest.
- Greet everybody fast, even if it's just "Hi, I'll be right with you." A table that's been acknowledged waits a lot more patiently.
Double or triple sat
- Batch your drinks. Take drinks at every new table, then make one trip.
- Batch your orders the same way.
- Stagger the food so it doesn't all hit at once, for you or the kitchen.
- Ice all the cups first, then fill. Batching is what saves you.
- Never walk to the kitchen empty-handed. Grab plates and glasses on every trip.
If you keep getting buried, it might be your section, not you. Ask for a smaller one until you're faster. That's not weakness. That's smart.
Week one is supposed to feel like this. It gets easier fast once batching becomes automatic.
